Baking Mistakes that Can Be Killing Your Cakes

Baking mistakes can ruin your baked masterpiece. If you want to improve your cake-making skills, here are a few flubs you’ll want to avoid.

You don’t measure with care

The right measurements matter if you want your cake to turn out well. That means investing in proper measuring tools. Don’t go for cheap analog scales. Go for digital sales when you shop for cake tools and supplies. And instead of cutlery spoons, use calibrated measuring spoons. That should ensure accurate measurements.

You substitute or add ingredients

It’s true that other bakers may substitute ingredients or add a few. But that only works if you’re an experienced baker. If you’re a rookie baker, though, then that’s one of the worst mistakes you can make. If you keep adding ingredients or substituting one, that could be why your cakes don’t taste as good as they should.

You skip a few steps

If you don’t follow the recipe to the letter, then you’re going to have a tough time getting your cakes right. If you skip a step or do them in the wrong order, then that’s going to mess up the cake as well. Learn to follow instructions to a T.

You don’t know the basics

Be sure to read up on baking basics before you attempt to make a cake, Good Housekeeping says. Do you know the difference between creaming, beating, and folding? If you don’t, then you’ll want to read up and educate yourself. All the best cake tools in the world won’t be able to help you if you haven’t got the basics down pat.

Your prep work is lousy

You’ll need to prepare the cake tin before anything else. You’ll need to line it up, depending on your recipe. Again, follow the instructions. Don’t skip any steps. That’s going to help you get the results you want.
